Garynahine Lodge - Isle of Lewis 2013
Garynahine Estate lies next to the world famous Grimesta River system. Although Garynahine cannot boast as famous a river system, it can boast a river (The Blackwater) and loch system that has fantastic runs of salmon & sea trout. On our visit in 2011 we counted literally dozens of fish running the river every half hour many of which we landed.
The salmon and sea trout fishing on Garynahine is at its best from July to October, although spring salmon and sea trout do enter the Blackwater River in April and May. The trout fishing in Lewis is excellent in the spring months and Garynahine is the perfect base for a combined brown trout/spring salmon fishing holiday.
There is also good varied fishing available on the numerous lochs either by boat, by wading, or by casting from the banks.
- 4 miles double banked river fishing with 32 named pools with some rest huts
- Shared ghillie
- 3 principal salmon lochs (2 with boats)
- 15 separate loch systems which contain brown trout, sea trout and occasional salmon.
Bookings are Sunday to Sunday as there is no Sunday fishing
All fishing is normally available only with the Lodge but occasionally by the day at £25 to £50 per rod per day.

The Lodge is situated on the West Coast of the Isle of Lewis and is approximately 15 miles from Stornoway Airport and 12 miles from the town. Garynahine is a traditional Hebridean sporting lodge that offers the chance to be Laird for the week. The accomodation comprises of the following:-
Ground Floor: 2 Public Rooms, Games room, Kitchen, Dining Room, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, 1 Shower Room , 2 toilets, Rod Room and Gun Room.
First Floor: Drawing Room, 4 Double/Twin Bedrooms with En Suite, 1 Double/Twin Bedroom, 2 Single Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms and a Shower Room.
Second Floor, 2 Double/Twin Bedrooms with En Suites.
The lodge will be let for either Self Catering or Catered. Prices will be based on 12 people but extra can be accommodated for with a surcharge per head per night.
The Blackwater river meets the sea a few hundred yards from the lodge, due to this throughout the season the Blackwater river boasts good runs of fresh run salmon and sea trout. As is the case with most rivers in the Hebrides the Blackwater is not wide although still wide by hebridean standards towards the mouth. A good sturty 10ft single handed rod or switch rod will cover most situations with a 13ft double hander being required only in very high water on the lower river. After spates the boat pool and the long pools can hold hundreds of fish and as we expericenced in 2011 when they come on sport can be fast and furious!
At Garynahine, expect wild and secluded fishing. Travel light and fish fast to cover the water. A 10ft rod and floating line is ideal for all species and our resident gamekeeper/ghillie is always on hand to give tuition if required. Salmon flies in sizes 10 and 12 are normally used and a Muddler on the dropper can be particularly effective. For trout, dark patterns and bushy dropper flies in sizes 10 and 12 will work best. You will rarely need anythig other that a floating line along with a good selection of summer flies such as cascase, stoats tails and crathies.
To sum up, for those of you that want to experience the unique fishing experience that the hebirdes has on offer and to be Laird for the week with out busting the bank then this is the one for you. Your ghillie is Donnie Whiteford who is an expert angler in his own right and will work hard to get you your fish!
